What’s the difference between serums, cleansers, and moisturizers?

They all play different functions when it comes to skin maintenance.

  • Cleansers are the first step to clear your skin from makeup, dead skin cells, oil, and dirt. Maintaining a clean face will help in the prevention of clogged pores or other conditions such as acne.
  • Serums act as a layer to help retain moisture when it’s applied before the moisturizer. Dryer skin benefits well because it serves as an extra hydration layer before the moisturizer. For oily or combination skin, use alone for a lighter hydration effect.
  • Moisturizers seal moisture in your skin and help keep your skin hydrated. Followed by a serum, they nourish your skin to maintain a healthy glow.

Many people opt for either a serum or a moisturizer. Your skin will let you know how much moisture it needs; it’ll feel greasy if it’s getting too much. On the other hand, your skin will feel tight if it’s not hydrated well enough.

Do I need to use all three?

All type of skin benefits from a cleanser, it’s the first step to clear your skin from makeup, dead skin cells, oil, and dirt. If you have dry skin, you will benefit from using a serum and moisturizer. However, if your skin is oily or combination, then using the serum or the moisturizer alone will suffice. If you live in an area with dry weather, you might need to moisturize a bit more than usual. Skin is prone to be drier during the winter months when the humidity is lower.

There are instances that you might need to adjust your moisturizing routine as the weather changes due to the moisture in the air.

What is the recommended use for these on a daily, weekly or monthly basis?

We recommend washing your face with a cleanser, follow with a serum, and finishing with a moisturizer if needed, every day morning and night. You might feel like skipping either the serum or the moisturizer, and it’s possible to do so based on the season and how your skin feels, however, everyday usage will grant better results.

Do they have to be in the same “family”?

Products do not need to be in the same family. You can mix and match according to your skin condition, weather, troubles, and goals.

Can I apply essential oils directly to my skin?

It is important to know that essential oils cannot be applied directly to the skin without being diluted with a carrier substance or oils such as jojoba oil, coconut oil, and pomegranate seed oil, to name a few, to avoid skin irritation. Always do a skin test on any product before using.
